SDG of the Month - SDG 17 (March)

Well it's the start of a new month, and for the month of March we have chosen to focus on Sustainable Development Goal 17! So you may be wondering a couple things, what is SDG 17, why SDG 17, and what can I do to have an impact on SDG 17?

So, what is SDG 17?

First things first, SDG 17 is Partnerships for the Goals, which in short focuses on partnerships between governments, the private sector, and civil society to ultimately revitalize the global partnership for sustainable development.

Through various indicators made by the United Nations, SDG 17 can be implemented and achieved by individuals like YOU. In order for the other 16 goals to be achieved, SDG 17 is critical to their achievement through strong commitment and partnership. What this means, is the other 16 Sustainable Development Goals, can not and will not be achieved without SDG 17.

Essentially, we are all in this together. We need ALL individuals at ALL levels to share a vision, and ultimately create change. According to the United Nations "These inclusive partnerships built upon principles and values, a shared vision, and shared goals that place people and the planet at the centre, are needed at the global, regional, national and local level."

Why SDG 17?

You may be wondering now, okay but why SDG 17? Well, in order for the 2030 Agenda for the Sustainable Development Goals to become reality, we need ALL people from ALL areas to come together including: governments, civil society, academia, science, private sectors etc., in both developed and underdeveloped countries.

Secretary General for the United Nations, Ban Kl-moon, stated "to successfully implement the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, we must swiftly move from commitments to action. To do that, we need strong, inclusive, and integrated partnerships at all levels."

Target areas such as finance, trade, technology, capacity-building, and systemic issues are focused on to unlock, redirect, and open the potential of resources globally.

What can I do?

So you may be wondering now though, okay what can I do? Heres a couple examples of actions you can take:

  • Join or create a group within your local community that seeks to mobilize action on the implementation of the SDGs

  • Join Youthnited Nations Call to Action Committee that is dedicated to achieving the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development Goals, and submit your actions to youthnitednations@gmail.com

  • Encourage your governments to partner with businesses to increase the implementation and collaboration of SDGs

  • Register initiatives you are involved in, and become inspired of others action at: https://sustainabledevelopment. un.org/partnerships.

In order to make an impact on the 2030 Agenda, we as partners, need to mobilize the current existing and additional resources (technology, financial resources, capacity building, etc.) via partnerships, especially to those without access. It is the responsibility of developed countries to act within their own capacities to fulfill development assistance commitments.

It is YOU as an individual that can have an impact on the Sustainable Development Goals. Now, let's work together, create partnerships, and make this happen.
